About Me

My name is Kathryn Harper. I'm a purple-haired 60-something woman who loves reading, making art, and spreading kindness. I recently returned to Swap-bot after a 9-year break, because I'm longing to slow down, create, and connect again. This is a wonderful place to do that.

UPDATE 3/27/26: This week I received a breast cancer diagnosis, so my life is about to change dramatically. I plan to follow through on my swaps in a timely manner. I'm sharing so recipients have some context and might offer grace if I am ever late. I will communicate as efficiently as possible if I think that will be the case.

Here is what I do/make/prefer:

Art: primarily abstract painting (acrylics and watercolor), collage/assemblage, photography

Write: poetry, essay, blogging, memoir

Read: fiction (historical, suspense, mystery, literary), memoir, biography, science, history

I've lived in: Syracuse, NY, until age 31; Austin, TX for 10 years; San Jose, CA 2004-now

Spiritual affiliation: Buddhist, mindfulness

Professions: former librarian and non-profit Manager; currently psychotherapist

Smoker: No

Allergies: none to food, animal, dust, wool or smoke

Colors: I love color. My walls are a neutral beige so I can put up paintings and photos; they look best with the contrast. I have purple hair. However, I also love green in all its shades. I wear a lot of purple, green, and blue. I love light spaces. We chose our house based on how much natural light came through the windows. I like dark cozy spaces also; I just didn't want to live in one.

Postcards

I like all sorts of images. I like images of people, food, nature, animals, mythological beings, humorous postcards, feminist images, leftist/democratic politics, art, monuments, cityscapes, waterscapes, landscapes. I'm open to all kinds of postcards. Cathedrals and other religious structures are fine (the architecture can be fascinating).

Love To Receive

  • Dark chocolate, including sea salt, caramel, chili pepper, mint; I like white chocolate in small amounts
  • Postcards (see above category for ideas)
  • Beverages: coffee, black teas, Starbucks/Peets gift cards
  • Incense: (long stick type): Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Amber, Vanilla, Jasmine, Pine,
  • Bookmarks: handmade or store bought
  • Paintbrushes (for acrylics, not natural bristle)
  • Mini canvases or panels (2x2", 4x4", 5x7")
  • Papers of all colors, prints, and textures
  • Embellishments and ephemera
  • Mosaic tiles, buttons, beach glass
  • Natural items like shells, acorn caps, dried flowers, leaves, seeds, bones, feathers
  • Images: moon, Buddha, feminine divine, animals, trees, natural places

More Things I Like

Vacation: camping in National and State parks
Favorite holidays: Litha/Summer Solstice and Mabon/Autumn Equinox
Favorite natural places: Bodies of water, mountains, forests
Favorite season: Autumn
Music: Folk, world, alternative, new age, ambient, trip-hop

Not A Fan Of

  • Loose glitter
  • Opera, country, heavy metal music
  • Horror genre (t.v., books, movies)
  • Makeup, Nail polish/gels
  • Fundamentalism
  • Precious Moments anything

Comment: BEAUTIFUL card! And I really enjoyed your wonderful letter, thank you so much! Gig Harbor would be a great place to retire. But yeah, the long rainy season with short, dark days is real and I'm not sure anybody every gets used to it, we just accept it. I went to Florida this winter and loved it! I think I'll go for a longer stay next winter. I came home to cold rain and strong winds. My body revolted, so I turned up the heat and put on a sundress. Ha! Dragon boating - a long narrow boat that seats 20, two paddlers on each bench. Paddling in time with each other is key. The tiller stands up in the back of the boat. They have a really long paddle, and they steer the boat. The Puget Sound is a wonderful place to paddle. Every once in awhile we see moon jelly "blooms". Literally thousands of small white translucent jelly fish. It takes my breath away every time I see them. We stop paddling and just glide through the bloom in awe. SAR - fortunately we almost never have recoveries. It's mostly doing emergency tows for boats that break down, or rescuing paddlers when the wind whips up unexpectantly, and boat inspections. We recently had three orca whales here in our little harbor, which doesn't happen very often. They mostly stay up North. We have some pods of resident orca whales in the Sound, and they truly are a sight to see. Did you see any when you visited here? Is the Farallone Island book you mentioned The Devil's Teeth by Susan Casey, or Neighborhood Sharks by Katherine Roy? I'll see if our library has them. Thanks for writing such a nice letter!
Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed the letter. I knew when I read your profile you'd be someone I'd enjoy grabbing a coffee with. :) The book I mentioned was The Devil's Teeth by Susan Casey -- really excellent read. Have a lovely weekend!

Comment: Thank you for sharing with me your weekend. Planning your lunches out so you can just grab and go, is very organized. Your weekend seemed so enjoyable. Ahhh, I recall teaching my son, now 22, how to drive. I was more nervous than he was, LOL. Today was a high of 34, and this morning when I awoke it was 23. All part of living in the mountains. In two days, it will be 76. We have a short spring. Winter never wants to let go and then when it does, it will be summer. I hope your temps have stayed in the normal range for you. Have a wonderful weekend. And thanks again for sharing.
Response: I enjoyed writing the letter and am happy it was a pleasure to read! Have a great weekend. :)

Comment: Some very philosophical musings from this Drunk PC, I like it! :D Somehow, it's still quite amazing that anyone -- or anything -- can get lost in this modern world of GPS gadgetry, doesn't it?

Hello! I'm going to leave you this comment for the swap (you're my partner.) hm.. I'm not sure what I should say. How about if I just leave you with one of my favourite quotes:
'True friends, like ivy and the wall, both stand together, and both together fall.'

Kay have a nice day!

Thank you for being an angel for the What's Your Spark swap. I also find that I am not as active in the things that use to be my sparks before children, especially reading. SoulCollage looks very interesting.
